AI for marketing: what a small Indian brand can automate
Use AI for drafts and first replies. Keep anything with a price, a face or a claim for a human. Plus the new ASCI and DPDP rules a small brand needs to know.
SEO gets your page ranked in Google's blue links. AEO shapes a page so it can be lifted as a direct answer. GEO gets your brand named inside ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity replies. For an Indian D2C brand, do SEO first, write answer-first pages for AEO, then earn mentions on other sites for GEO.
Ask ChatGPT "best protein powder under ₹2,000 in India" and it names three or four brands. Your brand is either in that list or it is not. Nobody sees a page-one ranking, because there is no page one.
That one moment is why three acronyms now fight for space in every marketing deck. SEO is the work of ranking your pages in search results. AEO is the work of structuring content so an engine can pick it as the direct answer. GEO is the work of getting your brand cited inside answers that AI tools write. Here is what each does and what a small brand should do first.
SEO ranks pages, AEO gets a passage picked as the answer, and GEO gets your brand named in an AI-written reply. The definitions below follow WSCube Tech's July 2026 guide, and the table adds an India lens.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full form | Search Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | Generative Engine Optimization |
| Goal | Higher rank, more clicks | Be the one answer shown | Be named in the AI reply |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, voice, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude |
| What you win | A click to your site | A quoted passage | A brand mention |
| What drives it | Technical health, relevance, links | Short direct answers, clear structure | Mentions on other sites, reviews, authority |
| Check it by | Rank and organic traffic | Snippet and AI Overview appearances | Asking AI tools your buyer questions |
| Best first move for a D2C brand | Fix product and category pages | Add a quick answer to each page | Get listed and reviewed elsewhere |
Treat the table as three layers of one job. Experts do disagree on the borders. MO Agency's May 2026 explainer notes that some practitioners treat AEO and GEO as the same thing, while the academic view says AEO extracts one answer and GEO blends several sources. For your plan, the labels matter less than the work.
Yes. SEO is the base, because an engine has to crawl and trust your pages before it can rank or quote them. Pixelmojo's May 2026 comparison says GEO is not replacing SEO and that Google still drives more high-intent, transactional queries than any AI engine. Read that as the publisher's view, since no measured number backs it.
For a new D2C brand the practical meaning is simple. People still Google "hair oil for dandruff" and click through to product pages. Your category pages, product pages and Google Business or marketplace listings need to be found first.
Skip the panic about "SEO is dead". Skip the opposite panic too. Run SEO as the foundation and add the other two on top.
AEO works by putting a short, complete answer at the top of each page so a passage can be lifted on its own. MO Agency points out that AI engines retrieve single passages from a page.
Here is the product page version. A page for a ₹799 face serum should open with two sentences: what it is, who it is for, and the one proof point. Then a small table of ingredients and skin types. Then five real questions with two to four sentence answers.
Test for every section: if an AI tool pasted only this paragraph, would a stranger understand it?
That test is the whole AEO craft. No hacks, no tricks. If you want the positioning half of this, what is brand positioning covers how to write the one line that every page should repeat.
You get named by being mentioned in many places the AI trusts, and most of those places are not your website. This is the idea I rarely see in ranking articles.
Arcalea's AEO vs SEO vs GEO page reports from its own July 2026 index that 95.8% of AI answer citations point to third-party sources rather than brand domains. It is a first-party figure from one company, so read it as a direction. That direction is still useful.
Think of the shopkeeper at Nehru Place. Ask him which laptop to buy and he names the brands that other customers keep talking about. He does not read your brochure. AI tools behave in a similar way: they lean on what the web says about you.
So GEO is mostly a distribution job. Where does the web talk about your category?
Your own films matter here too. A clear product video on YouTube with a good title and description is one more place that describes your product in your words. My product video brief guide shows how to plan one so it says something specific.
Next week: the full list of questions to ask AI tools about your brand, and how to read the answers.
Ask five buyer questions in three AI tools, write down who gets named, and repeat monthly. It costs nothing. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in separate tabs.
Make a simple sheet with the question, the tool, the brands named, and whether you were in it. Run it on the same day each month. Save the exact wording of any claim the AI makes about you. Wrong claims tell you what to fix on your site and on your listings.
One more thing from this test. When the AI names a rival, open the sources it shows. Those are the pages you want to appear on. If you find the same review site three times, that site is your next outreach target.
If you ran this and thought "we have never written down what our product is for", I can help with that part. I set brand positioning and content strategy first, then make the films. Send a note on LinkedIn or look at my brand strategy work.
Do them in layers, starting with SEO this month, AEO next, and GEO as a slow background habit. The order matters more than the budget.
| Stage | Budget level | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Near zero | Fix titles, product names and descriptions on your site. Add a 2 sentence answer on top of every key page. |
| Month 2 | Small | Write 5 question pages from the real questions in your customer chats. |
| Month 3 and on | Small, steady | Ask for reviews, get one creator video a month, pitch one "best in India" list. |
Treat these steps as a starting plan. For timing, vendors quote very different numbers. Arcalea says SEO takes 3 to 6 months and AEO 2 to 6 months, while Pixelmojo says AEO can show in 7 to 14 days per page. Both are the companies' own estimates with no outside data, so plan in months.
There is also a gap worth knowing. Agency Reporter's March 2026 piece says most small and mid-sized marketing teams in India have not started GEO work. That is a reported view with no survey behind it. If it holds, doing the 30 minute test already puts you ahead of most brands in your category.
The common mistakes are all about treating GEO as a trick. Each one wastes money.
For the wider picture on using AI tools safely, read AI for marketing: what a small Indian brand can automate. Let the tools speed up the checking, then have a human decide what to change.
Your action for this week: run the five questions, fill the sheet and pick the single biggest hole. If you are missing from every answer, start with your Amazon.in listing and one honest product video. Do that before you spend anything on a new agency retainer.
SEO ranks your pages in search results. AEO structures content so an engine can use it as the direct answer. GEO aims to get your brand cited or named inside AI-written replies from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. They overlap a lot, and they share the same content base.
No. SEO is the foundation, because AI tools and search engines both need to crawl and trust your pages. Arcalea's 2026 guide describes the three as layers of one visibility job, and Pixelmojo says GEO is not replacing SEO. Keep SEO running and add AEO and GEO on top.
Be described well in many places. That means full marketplace listings, real reviews, independent YouTube videos, forum answers and press lists, plus clear pages on your own site. Arcalea's index reports that most AI citations point to third-party sources, so off-site mentions carry a lot of weight.
Yes, but as a light monthly habit that takes an hour. Run a 30 minute test of five buyer questions each month, fix wrong answers, and keep collecting reviews and creator videos. You do not need a paid tool to start.
SEO first, with AEO built into the same work. Fix your titles, product names and descriptions, then add a two sentence direct answer at the top of each key page. That one change helps both Google and AI tools.
WSCube Tech lists structured data as one step for optimising across all three. It helps engines read your page, but it will not rescue thin content. Write clear answers first, then add markup.
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same five buyer questions and record which brands appear. Repeat monthly and note changes. Open the sources the tools show, since those are the pages that shape the answers.
